Collective Bargaining and Campaigns

Our Union has a proud history of collective bargaining. We have been on the leading edge of negotiating improvements in wages and working conditions across Canada.

In the early years, our Union brought unionization to the scores of unorganized loggers and millworkers whose employers were taking advantage of their labour. Our Union brought thousands of workers improvements in working conditions, livable hours of work and better wages. We were among the first industrial unions to eliminate wage inequality for women and workers of colour and have always been at the forefront in negotiating health and safety provisions and improvements in our collective agreements.

Today, the challenges are just as great.

The Steelworkers -- IWA Council has the following important collective bargaining functions as part of its mandate:

  • Develop a national bargaining agenda for the forest sector and other sectors in our jurisdiction;
  • Work with the Canadian National Office, Districts and Local Unions to provide the best possible research and corporate information to support negotiating committees;
  • Identify and target employers within our jurisdiction and develop strategic campaigns to support organizing, contract enforcement and collective bargaining; and
  • Coordinate collective bargaining efforts by company, industry and/or region.
